American Idol Update: Here we go... TOP 13

Once again... I am going to write as I watch the show. Tonight... Michael Jackson songs. This should be interesting... since many of these songs should not even be attempted by anyone BUT... Michael Jackson.

First up...

Lil Rounds: I really think Lil has the voice to end up in the final 3. She is singing MJ's "The Way You Make Me Feel". I am not sure about her voice on THIS song. She is over-singing... almost yelling the song. This performance is not as strong as the one that got her here. She's trying to do WAY too much.. She sounds a little too operatic on the high notes. I really like Lil... but this was not a great performance. She'll still go a long way though.

Scott MacIntyre: OK... for starters... I have never heard this song in my life ("Keep The Faith"). Interesting choice. He does sound good singing it though. Maybe that is why he chose it. Nice piano work. WOW... tough key change... NICE! I can't believe I'm saying this... he actually sounds pretty good on this song. Still don't think he is strong enough (vocally) to go very far into the competition. He is a FAN FAVORITE though. America loves him. Who knows.

Danny Gokey: My pick from the auditions (along with Dave Osmond - who went home with laryngitis... augh!). Danny is singing "P.Y.T.". WOW! The dude is BRINGIN' IT! Unbelievable! He's not a dancer.... but this IS a vocal competition. I love this guy! He has such a strong... soulful voice. He should (easily) be in the FINAL 3 at the end of the season. WOW!

Michael Sarver: I like this guy too.... but I have to admit that I am getting a little tired of his voice already. I don't think he will go very far into the season. Great song choice! "You Are Not Alone". He sounds pretty good on this one. He is a little "closed off" on some of the big notes... but still strong tonight. WOW... I'm a fan again. Nice job, Michael.

Jasmine Murray: I don't know much about Jasmine... other than the fact that she is very young. She is singing "I'll Be There". Ohhhhh... she's not even in the same league as the other vocalists. How did she get this far? She is very "average"... and also very "mechanical" on the ad-libs. It doesn't come natural to her at all. I'm not liking what she is doing to this song. OK... I am going to predict that she will probably be one of the 2 to go home tomorrow night.

Kris Allen: He is singing MJ's "Remember The Time". I don't think that this is an acoustic guitar song. that's a little strange to me. I like his voice. I like what he is doing with the song too. He sings out of the side of his mouth. Interesting. Ooooh... a little out of control at the end there. Ha ha! Simon mentioned the guitar thing. So did Randy! Cool!

Allison Iraheta: Oh, WOW! She is rockin' out MJ's "Give In To Me! Strong vocal! I'm totally impressed with Allison. She is like "PINK meets Kelly Clarkson". Again... WOW! She is absolutely "selling" this song. Now... this sounds nothing like the Aretha Franklin tune that she sang on her intro video. She is a very versatile 16 year old vocalist. Good stuff! Definitely TOP 3 material.

Anoop Desai: Anoop is singing...... Noooooo!!!! Not "Beat It"!!!! Only Michael can sing "Beat It"!!!! I don't like where this is going already. OK... he is singing sharp. WOW! His movements are just awkward too. Sorry... it just didn't work, Anoop "Dog". Could be another one of the 2 to go home tomorrow night.

Jorge Nunez: I have said it before... I like this guy. I don't think he has a great voice... but I like him. He is singing The Jackson 5 song, "Never Can Say Goodbye". His vocal is very "unfocused". He's flat on one note... and then sharp on the next. Ouch... not a good performance at all.

Simon just said something that was pretty funny:

Simon: What were you thinking when you picked THAT Michael Jackson song?
Jorge: Well... I didn't want to sing "Bad".
Simon: I think you just DID.

Megan Corkrey: She will be singing "Rockin' Robin". Here she goes: OK... this is just WEIRD! Quirky vocal thing going on. She's doing (what I think is) "the twist"???? How in the world... did she make it to the TOP 13??? Bye bye, Megan!

Felicia was A LOT better than Megan or Jasmine. I don't get it!

Interesting: I never knew that The Jackson 5 recorded "Rockin' Robin". How did I miss that? It must have been a cover tune for them.

Adam Lambert: I like this kid. He is singing MJ's "Black & White". WOW... he is a PERFORMER! He reminds me of like a young Steven Tyler. He is soaring on this song! WOW! This is (by far) the most memorable performance of the night (the whole package). Again... this is a guy who could go all the way. Strong!

Matt Giraud: Matt is singing "Human Nature". I am loving the "hornsby-eque" piano on this. This is a good song choice for his voice. Oooh... he is a little pitchy on the falsetto notes... but WOW... he's staying up there forever! He CAN sing! I liked it. Not my fav... but I liked it.

Alexis Grace: She is singing MJ's "Dirty Diana". I am not familiar with this song at all. I really liked Alexis a lot... until right now. She is way... over-singing this thing. She is actually overshooting many of the pitches. WOW... I'm not feeling this at all. She is screaming it. I don't think that this one performance can hurt her though. She is still a solid contender.

So... my favorites tonight:

Danny Gokey
Adam Lambert
Allison Iraheta

My picks to GO HOME tomorrow night?

Jasmine Murray
Megan Corkrey
or Anoop

More next week...

The Jackson 5 recorded Rockin' Robin back around'73...I believe the album was 'Lookin' Through The Window'. The cover was brown. How do I remember that? Asperger's is a blessing is disguise at times. The cover just flashed into my mind. wild stuff : )
